This week we’re back with a interview that was actually recorded in Dec. 2007. It was one of the front-runners to the something beautiful podcast and helped lead to our podcast’s birth.

This week we talk with Jonathan’s maternal grandfather, Deryl Knotts.

Deryl was born June 20, 1921 in Franklin County, Texas to Perry and Fannie Knotts. He graduated from Mount Vernon High School where he played basketball and football and spent a year at East Texas State Teacher’s College on a basketball scholarship before returning home to farm during World War II.

In 1948 he moved to Dallas, where he took a position working for Sutton and Steal, building casings for World War II ammunition.

After the war he began working for Ford Motor Company. He met his wife, Oleta Glasco in the spring of 1949 and the two were married Jan. 6, 1950. After Ford Motor Company closed their Dallas plant in the early 1970s, Deryl went to work for White Motor Company where he later retired.

He spent several years of his retirement as a security guard at the Science Place at Fair Park in Dallas and spent much of his free time either gardening or enjoying time with his family.

Deryl’s faith and family always took priority in his life and he always gave of himself unconditionally.

He was an active member of Pleasant Mound United Methodist Church in Dallas for over four decades and a member of Eastridge Park Christian Church in Mesquite for the last five years.

Deryl died March 17, 2009 in Mesquite, Texas.
